About the Add Page Numbers to PDF
Theses, reports, contracts and merged documents are much easier to read and refer to when every page is numbered. This tool stamps clean page numbers onto an existing PDF.
You can skip a cover page, start counting from any number and choose a format such as 3, Page 3, Page 3 of 12 or 3 / 12.
How to use the Add Page Numbers to PDF
- Choose or drop a PDF file.
- Pick a Position (for example bottom centre) and a Format.
- Set the First number and, if you want to skip pages such as a cover, type the pages to number (for example
2-20). - Click Add page numbers to download the numbered PDF.
How it works
Numbers are drawn in Helvetica on each selected page with pdf-lib, about half an inch from the chosen edge. Pages that are rotated are handled so the number always appears upright in the right place.
Number shown = first number + (position of the page among the numbered pages − 1). The “of N” total is the count of numbered pages, adjusted for the first number.
Examples
- A 12-page report, bottom centre, format Page 1 of 12.
- A thesis with a cover and an index page: number pages
3-60, first number 1, so the first chapter page shows 1.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded to your server?
No. The PDF is opened and processed by your own browser. It never leaves your device, so it is safe to use with private documents.
Can I leave the cover page without a number?
Yes. Type the pages to number, for example 2-20, and set the first number to 1 if you want counting to start after the cover.
Is the original text changed?
No. Only a small number is added on top of each page; everything else stays exactly as it was.
