About the Character Counter

Many places limit text by characters rather than words: SEO titles and meta descriptions, SMS messages, X (Twitter) posts, bios and form fields. This character counter shows the count as you type, with and without spaces, and compares your text against common limits with a progress bar for each.

How to use the Character Counter

  1. Type or paste your text.
  2. Watch the Characters count and the limit bars update live.
  3. A bar turns red when your text is over that limit.

How it works

  • Characters counts every visible symbol, space and line break. An emoji or an accented letter counts as one character.
  • Characters (no spaces) removes all spaces, tabs and line breaks.
  • Bytes (UTF-8) is the storage size. English letters use 1 byte; Urdu letters usually use 2 bytes and emojis 4 bytes — which is why some systems allow fewer non-English characters.

Examples

  • "Useful Tools. One Simple Place." has 31 characters and 27 without spaces.
  • Search engines usually show about 50–60 characters of a page title and 150–160 characters of a meta description.

Frequently asked questions

Do spaces count as characters?

Yes, in most limits (SMS, social posts, SEO titles) spaces count. The tool shows both counts so you can use whichever you need.

How many characters fit in one SMS?

A standard SMS holds 160 characters using basic Latin letters. Messages containing Urdu or emojis use a different encoding and fit only 70 characters per part.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The counting happens in your browser and your text stays on your device.
