About the Readability Checker
Clear writing keeps readers on your page. This checker scores your text with the most widely used readability formulas and points out sentences that are too long.
For websites, aim for a Flesch Reading Ease of 60 or more and a grade level around 8 — easy enough for most adults, including people reading in a second language.
How to use the Readability Checker
- Paste your English text.
- Read the scores and statistics.
- Shorten the highlighted long sentences and replace long words with simpler ones, then check again.
How it works
Flesch Reading Ease = 206.835 − 1.015 × (words ÷ sentences) − 84.6 × (syllables ÷ words). Flesch–Kincaid grade = 0.39 × (words ÷ sentences) + 11.8 × (syllables ÷ words) − 15.59. Gunning Fog, SMOG, Coleman–Liau and ARI are also shown. Syllables are estimated from vowel groups.
Examples
- “The cat sat on the mat.” → very easy (Flesch 100+).
- A legal paragraph with 40-word sentences → difficult (Flesch below 30).
