About the Roman Numeral Converter
Roman numerals still appear on clocks, book chapters, film credits, building stones and event names. Type a number to see it in Roman numerals, or type Roman numerals to get the number — with a breakdown of each symbol.
Only the standard form is accepted (for example IV, not IIII), which makes it useful for checking homework.
How to use the Roman Numeral Converter
- Type a number (1 to 3,999,999) or a Roman numeral.
- Read the conversion and the breakdown table.
How it works
Symbols: I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1,000. A smaller symbol before a larger one is subtracted (IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400, CM = 900). From 4,000 a line over a symbol multiplies it by 1,000.
Examples
- 2026 = MMXXVI (1000 + 1000 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 1).
- 1947 = MCMXLVII.
- XLIX = 49.
